Another big thumbs down for Apple...

Apple has decided to incorporate a copy protection known as HDCP in their new unibody MacBooks, MB Pros amd MB Airs. It's to thereotically prevent unauthorized copying of digital content.
A school teach attempted to play a movie from his MacBook to a Sanyo projector, using a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. Because the adapter is not HDCP aware, the teacher received this message, and the MacBook would not play the movie.
Keep in mind, this won't be a problem for most people, but for the iTune movies that are HDCP encoded, and for users of newer MacBooks with DisplayPort, it could eventually be a hassle. But then again, I've quit using iTunes. I purchase my music from Amazon.com now.

CF Card - data integrity

I've been testing a Transcend 32G card.  The concept of a huge card sounds appealing, but I've never felt comfortable putting all my eggs in one basket (or images on one card).  Anyway, sure enough clicking along with
about 100 images on the card, I get a "card error" message and the my camera (1D mkIII) told me I needed to format the card. Hmmm. To carry my testing to a conclusion, I simply popped the card out of the camera and commenced to recovering the image files.  No files.

All programs, including one sent from Transcend, reported 100% bad sectors.  I asked Transcend to please replace the 32G cards with 8G cards, but they didn't do it. Jiminy crickets.

Lesson learned: Stick with SanDisk no matter the cost....and...I just can't rely on the big cards. I'm much more comfortable with the 4G and 8G cards.  Even with the 8G, I still change cards at appropriate breaks in the day.  I have never (knock on wood) experienced problems with either Lexar or Sandisk.  Regardless, that's why I use Canon 1 series professional cameras.  Every image is backed up on a SD card. (we also use ...and love... 5D's, but my primary camera will alwasy be a 1D or 1Ds)

UPDATE: Wow.  Talk about a timely discovery.  While reading an article by Scott Kelby (photoshop guru and professional photographer), he mentions his use (and testing) of Hoodman RAW CF cards. The cards have had ZERO world-wide failures since it's introduction.  Browers Photography will switch over to Hoodman for 2009.  Why do most people NOT shoot Hoodman?  They're more expensive.  To me, $100 extra for a card is nothing for proven reliability.  If you're interested, you can read more HERE or HERE.

George and Lauren...

Studio B! rocked the Lumen!

Studio B! rocked the annual CUREiosity event at Lumen in St. Louis. The event celebrated the "Rock Docs" making a difference at the Alvin J. Siteman Center. It was a blast and Studio B! was literally non-stop during the entire event. The guests absolutely loved Studio B! The entire event was amazing and featured break dancers and fire performers, as well as lots of dancing!

Shelley's private collection

We recently traveled 3 hrs NW of St Louis to photograph Shelley's session in a converted horse barn. Just so happend there was a covered wagon in the barn. Cool. Shelley is so nice and is getting married in 2009 to a wonderful man who is currently deployed with the Navy.

Another bit of computer info (hard drive failure)

I have a drive being reported to me as going bad. It's a Western Digital 1TB Caviar GP (green). Keep in mind, I use a lot of these drives and so far they've been pretty darn dependable. Anyway, I jumped on the WD site, typed in the serial number and they quickly told me the warranty was good until some time in 2011. They then let me arrange an immediate replacement to be shipped. I can ship the bad drive back after I receive the good drive. No muss, no fuss. I didn't even have to dig up my receipt, which is very cool.
