iTunes - DRM-free

In the event you've been stuck in a cave for the last few weeks, iTunes is now DRM-free. Finally!

Amazon.com has been DRM-free for some time (which is where I've gotten use to buying music), but it's still cool to see that the extremely popular iTunes is on board too!

Google Mail?

Do you have Google's Gmail? Don't need it? Here's a little trick. If you don't use Gmail, sign up for a free account anyway and have it download all your email from your regular POP3 account automatically. You get enough storage space to store years and years of email. THEN, if you ever lose your Outlook file...and the backup file is corrupt...you can go to your Google mail account and search through years of email in a split second. Hopefully, you'll never have to use it, but if you ever DO need to use it, you'll be SO HAPPY you tooke the 5 minutes to sign up for the account.

exquisite light...

There's not a better reflector than a white wedding dress.

Note for Photographers: The graduated filter coupled wih the effect slider in Adobe Lightroom is just freakin' awesome. If you don't use it much, play with it a while and check it out.

Holy Pano Batman!

Check this out. In the past, whenever I had the itch to create a cool Pano, I broke out a specialized program (The Panorama Factory), but this morning, I decided to give Photoshop CS4 a shot. It did an absolutely freaking amazing job without ANY alignment, point selection, or anything. I didn't even have to put the images in order. This image was 5 separate images taken with the 5D. I was NOT careful in alignment, and you can't tell it isn't one photo. The resulting file is 12549x2509 after cropping. How cool is that! By the way, CS4 has a cool feature when you're panning around a huge image, it "coasts"....like an ipod... Nifty.

one final stair post....for today....

1/125sec at f /2.8, ISO 1250 (1DmkII)
Seems in 2008 I had a fascination with stairs. I think Karen thought I must have been nuts when I asked her to lay on these cool stairs...but she did it with a smile! What do you think? Do you like it?

my hat is off to Capt Chesley B. Sullenberger III

I usually don't touch on current events much, since there is so much coverage in other places....but you have to be crazy impressed with the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549. Talk about a lifetime of training being put to the test...and he delivered big time. You have to love a happy ending! Mr. Sullenberger III ...IS a hero, whether he admits it or not.

Gorgeous Bride in Stairwell

1/250 sec at f /2.8, ISO 1600 (michael) - lighting-one sun
black and white version...probably the same as before. I'm sure lighting was still provided by the sun. I don't have to say it, but Karen is a stunningly gorgeous bride! Here, we simply used the wonderfully soft bounced sunlight coming from the window (to the right) and bouncing off the near wall just left of frame. Love it.

64bit vs 32bit

I know I promised to end the computer rambling, but I thought this was interesting (being new to the wonders of 64bit computing). I was reading an article on eventdv.net regarding 64bit vs 32bit and how Adobe Premiere CS4 delivers amazing productivity benefits with the 64bit system.

The author (Jan Ozer) was using a 2.83gHz HP xw6600 with 3GB 32bit XP system, a 3.33gHz xw8600 workstation (dual processor, quad core) running 64bit Vista with 16GB of Ram. He also, just for grins, ran the same test with a 3.2 GHz eight-core Power Mac running OSX with 8GB of ram. On one "highly complicate" AVCHD-based test, the 32bit XP machines took 68 minutes to render, the Mac in 11 minutes, and the 64bit Windows system rendered in 9 minutes. Wow. On other tests, after correcting for different CPU speeds, the 64 bit system was 67% faster on standard DV, 63% faster on HDV, and up to 50% faster on OAVCHD tests. On footage from a RED camera, it was up to 227% faster. I guess I need to start saving for more memory!

Back to reality. My cool little Dymo DiscPainter does not have a 64bit driver. Bummer.

BTW, I downloaded the Windows 7 Beta for 32 and 64bit. I just don't have the time or nerve to try it at this point. MS is removing the 2.5million download limit for the next two weeks. So if you happen to have a spare computer sitting around, you might give it a spin.

The internet saved us $1700

Our Refrigerator stopped refrigerating. Fortunately, we happen to have a second, smaller fridge in the garage that had enough room for most of the food. We were set to start looking at new fridges, when Lajuanna started looking up problems and parts on the net. At the same time, I started poking around under the hood of the fridge. Sure enough, the "start relay" was kaput.

We ordered the part for $47. We had a little confusion, because the new part is physically different from the old part, so looking at the online pictures, they weren't matching up. But a nice lady wrote up her experience. The symptoms and parts description were exactly what we have experienced down to the click, click of the compressor trying to start.

So, we have our fingers crossed that this part will get us back to refridgerating. I'll keep you posted and also get the link to the parts house from Lajuanna.

Wow...can a topic be any further from "photography" than this? Wait...film is kept in fridges....

UPDATE (1/13/09): The "Start Device" was the culprit. Total cost was about $75 with overnight shipping. Runs like brand new now. Cool...literally :)

Adobe Lightroom...

Okay. One more computer post and I'll drop it for a while. Lightroom is indispensable to many, many photographers, including myself and Lajuanna. I recently upgraded to the newest version 2.2. Imagine my disappointment when I started immediately experiencing lockups about 20 minutes into a editing session. Looking on the support forum, I wasn't the only one, and it was happening to Mac and PC alike. I thought I would just have to wait until a "fix" came along.

Well, this last two days have been spent upgrading my motherboard and memory, and because I was doing a clean install of Vista, I decided to go with the 64bit version. Lightroom is now written to take advantage of a 64bit OS. Also, a 64bit OS let's you take advantage of more than about 3G of RAM. I have 4G of DDR3 right now.
I'm happy to report that Lightroom's peformance has improved dramatically and is now very stable. This is without upgrading my CPU which is a modest Intel Quad-core (6700 I believe).
As mentioned before, my system disk and scratch/data disk are now both Seagates.

Enough about computers.

Hard Drives....

Let the record show that I will NEVER, ever, ever, use Western Digital hard drives again. They have been failing at an unprecedented rate! For now, I'll stick with Seagate drives. And yes, the DROBO is awesome and some day I'll get one (hopefully in 2009). They'll expand to 16TB and use firewire 800. Pretty freakin' awesome indeed.

AND, when I finally get my hands on a DROBO....it won't see a single Wester Digital hard drive!!!

Just noticed Newegg.com has the 2nd generation DROBO for $442, with a $50 rebate, making it $392. Makes it aweful tempting and if you're in the market for a viable, secure backup solution, check it out. Just read a review where the guy had 4 (you guessed it) Western Digital hard drives in it and they ALL fried. He was a videographer. He was nervous and was looking at a $8000 bill to recover the data, but the DROBO company recovered all the data for him. Wow.

In a year or so, you'll probably see a DROBO - SOLID STATE DRIVE version....interesting. How dependable are solid state drives?

Curious Question #2 - secrets, secrets!

Oh the intrigue!! "seious secrets" beat out "complete honesty" ...interesting. Not surprisingly, "little white secrets" is the norm in our little control group. But do tell....

Do you have secrets!?! That's curious question number two...but don't tell anyone! :)

You've seen the "post a secret blog" right?

Curious Question #1

The first 2009 curious question: Do you believe in the concept of "soul mates?" I know you could discuss what exactly a soul mate IS, but I'll leave that up to your interpretation. I'm just curious.
I'm gong to try posting on-going curious questions in the poll format above. Some might be very controversial or personal. If so, just answer anonymously if desired. It'll still be fun to see the response. I'll also have a corresponding blog entry should the question create discussion or provoke thought.
Curiously, a 95% people believe in "soul mates" in some manner. Very romantic.

Microsoft Professional Photography...

Did you know that Microsoft has a Pro Photo Site? Just another great source of photography information. What's really interesting (for Windows users) is the download page.

Along with Codecs and a nifty, simple little photographers add-in for Outlook appointments, it has a nice little tool called SyncToy. SyncToy maintains two exact folders or files across folders, drives, or computers.

I don't know if you've been keeping tabs or if you're even interested, but the next version of Windows, Windows 7, is promising to be an extremely fast and stable OS. It's always impossible to tell from a Beta version, but the initial reports have been favorable. Obviously, Microsoft is working extremely hard to make this next major OS release as stable as possible. It's already proven much faster than XP or Vista in bootup, shutdown, etc.

Gateway Bridal Show

Update: Studio B! is not going to be at the Gateway Bridal show as anticipated. We had some issues arise that precluded us from participating in the show. But check it out! I did go by today and they're going to have a lot of awesome vendors!

If you received a new camera or lens for Christmas, you might want to check out this handy little gizmo. One tip has a lens friendly brush, while the other has a pad/compound made specifically for light cleaning of smudges on a lens.
Occassionally I still use a wet system, if the lens is extremely dirty (rarely), but for a quick clean up, this thing works great. I also use it on our projector and video lens.
cheers,
michael

Studio B! rocked Lumiere Place!

Here's the Studio B! super crew from the Dec 30th Studio B! Me, of course, the rather dashingly handsome dude on the left...Brishen, our new associate photographer who decided to get in on a little B! action...Lajuanna, who BTW, worked a Studio B! on her BIRTHDAY, bless her heart....our honored guest Studio B! babe, Sabrina from Proposing Dreams helped out and last, but certainly not in any way LEAST, our very own super cool, super nice Rich. As I mentioned before, this amazing crew handled about 1200 guests with miles of smiles.

Happy 2009 everyone!

Hope everyone had a blast bringing in the new year! Lajuanna's mom is visiting and we wound up seeing "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" last night. It was a curious story indeed. Lajuanna and Yvonne loved it. I thought it was a great movie, but it was hard to stay awake watching it....and David positively thought it was the most boring movie ever, haha.

Lumiere Place ,in St Louis, had Studio B! for a very nice event on the 30th. We helped entertain about 1200 guests. It was a little different in that the guests just came through once and took a single photo, but it turned out great! The images were displayed on two screens flanking the stage, and each guest had their photograph in hand before they entered the theater for dining.
